DélicaTresson, a new multi-service store (“1000 cafés” initiative)

France Centre-Val de Loire

Short presentation

In Tresson, most shops had closed in July 2019, so the mayor and the municipality decided to work with Geraldine, the futur manager of the shop, and "1000 cafes" to reopen the village cafe and offer local services to inhabitants.

Re-open the village café and offer local services.

Contexte (territory issues, targeted audience)

This village of 474 inhabitants is one of the three Sarthe towns selected for the "1000 cafes" operation.

Most of the risk is assumed by SOS 1000 cafes. The association creates or takes over cafes in rural towns with fewer than 3,500 inhabitants. It supports each establishment in the search for local funding (institutional, private, participatory) to develop the service offer. It also takes care of training the new manager who has no own budget to contribute or investment to developp in the establishment. The 1000 cafes association ensures the direct remuneration of the manager who is paid (on the basis of the minimum wage to begin with) and housed.

Actions implemented

Pub, gourmet bistro, grocery store, products from local producers (honey, cheeses ...) and fair trade products.

Points of vigilance, difficulties to pass through, success factors

Importance of village cafes / shops. A resident explains that "the café is like the Church, it is the center of the village". And Chantal Buin, mayor of Tresson, clarified: "We are 474 inhabitants. We have a school. We want to keep it but for that, we need to attract families and provide human warmth".
